What a Dynasty League Is

A dynasty league is a fantasy baseball league where you keep your whole roster from one season to the next. There is one big startup draft when the league begins, and after that every spring brings a rookie draft of new players only. Minor leaguers sit on your roster in minor-league slots until they are ready. Future draft picks can be traded years ahead.

That changes how every decision feels. A 20-year-old shortstop in Double-A is a real asset. A 34-year-old ace is a sell-high candidate in July. A team out of the race in June is not done; it is rebuilding, and its 2028 first-round pick has a price. The offseason has trades in December and a rookie draft in March. Nobody quits, because everybody has a plan.

Dynasty leagues run any scoring format: rotisserie, head-to-head categories or head-to-head points. Ten to sixteen teams is common. The one thing they need is a group that will still be there in five years, and a host that treats picks, prospects and history as part of the game.

How to Set Up a Dynasty League

1. Pick the size and the scoring. Ten to fourteen teams keeps the free-agent pool alive. Choose rotisserie for the fairest six-month race or head-to-head for a weekly rhythm and a playoff.
2. Set the roster shape. Decide how many active, bench, injured-list and minor-league slots each team gets. Five minor-league slots is a common start; ten makes prospects matter a lot.
3. Decide the rookie draft. How many rounds, whether the order follows the standings or a lottery, and whether picks can be traded before the draft. Most leagues say yes to trading picks.
4. Write down the trade rules. A trade deadline, whether trades get commissioner review or a league vote, and whether future picks beyond next year can be dealt.
