A park factor measures how a ballpark changes a stat relative to a neutral environment, indexed to 100. A 110 HR factor means about 10% more home runs than average; 90 means 10% fewer. FanRanked computes them from three seasons of play-by-play, controlled for the quality of the teams batting there.
Because parks are asymmetric. Yankee Stadium's short right-field porch boosts left-handed power; Fenway's Green Monster turns fly balls into doubles; Oracle Park's Triples Alley suppresses lefty home runs. A single overall number hides the split that actually decides matchups.
Weight them most for streaming decisions and weekly planning: a fly-ball pitcher in Great American Ball Park is a HR risk, a contact hitter gains in Coors, and strikeout factors move pitcher K projections. FanRanked's weekly projections apply these automatically per game.
