In a head-to-head league you play one opponent a week, Monday through Sunday, and the week's stats decide who wins. It is the format that gives baseball a schedule, a playoff and a rival.

Every week the schedule pairs your team with another. Each of you sets a lineup, the games get played, and on Sunday night the week's totals are compared. Then the schedule moves on. Over a 22-week regular season you play everyone at least once and most teams twice, and the standings are a win-loss record.
What counts as a win depends on which of three head-to-head formats the league runs. The choice matters more than most commissioners realize.

Each category is the most common and the most strategic, because you can lose the week overall and still bank six category wins. Most categories is the easiest to explain to a new manager. Points is the natural landing spot for a group that already plays fantasy football together.
Most head-to-head leagues run a regular season of 20 to 23 weeks and a playoff of two or three rounds in September. Four or six teams make it. The championship is one week, sometimes two, which is why September call-ups and streaming pitchers matter so much in this format.
Two schedule rules keep the league fair. Set the all-star break week to either count as a two-week matchup or skip it, and decide before the draft. And put the trade deadline before the playoffs start, so a team out of the race cannot hand its ace to a contender.
Roto adds up the whole season and ranks every team in every category. There is no schedule and no playoff; the best six-month roster wins. Head-to-head chops the season into weeks. A cold April can be forgotten. A hot September can win a title. It is more random and more fun, and most groups that try it do not go back.
