JD on Jac Caglianone (Oct 21, 2026): Cags took a major leap forward in the second half of 2026 and may have gone under the radar because the Royals didn't have much else to watch this year. He slashed .337/.373/.549 with 8 home runs and 4 stolen bases, all while limiting his Ks to a very manageable 20.6% K rate. The underlying metrics back it up too with a 93.8(!) Average EV and xwOBA of .363, which wasn't far off from his full-season xwOBA of .359. The only thing in the profile that really screams regression is the .361 BABIP, however his expected batting average was .283 because the quality of his contact is so strong. I wouldn't expect as much batting average regression as you would typically expect to see from someone who ran a BABIP this high. The last piece of the puzzle that I'd really like to see from someone with as much power as he has is an improved launch angle. If he can get his 7.7° launch angle up to even 10° he's going to hit so many more home runs with how hard he hits the ball. From there, his only real deficit is his poor walk rate. But if it doesn't lead to an alarming amount of strikeouts, a la Joey Gallo, I'm not sure we necessarily need to concern ourselves with it from a fantasy perspective. I think he will be a very valuable dynasty asset if he makes that one tweak, and don't be afraid to make a big move early in 2027 if you see positive launch angle progress in April.
JD on Roman Anthony (Oct 27, 2026): I still believe in Roman Anthony long term, but I'm bracing for some bumps and bruises along the way. 2026 was basically a lost season. He tore a ligament at the base of his right ring finger on May 4 and didn't make it back until August 30, so he only got 242 plate appearances. Even so, the Statcast profile mostly held up. His average EV took a step back, from 94.5 mph in 2025 to 92.0 mph, and his hard-hit rate fell from 60.3% to 46.6%. Some of that is probably the hand. But 92 is still a number most hitters would kill for, and he paired it with an 11.7% barrel rate, a 12% walk rate and a 23.7% chase rate. His .341 xwOBA says he was better than his .735 OPS. Everything in the profile says he should be good. What worries me is that the hand isn't done with him yet. He re-aggravated it in Game 1 of the Wild Card series (against Schlittler, of all people), and the imaging found new strains in the wrist on top of the old ligament. The Red Sox say he won't need surgery and that rest is the plan, which is great. But hand and wrist injuries have a way of lingering, and they tend to sap power even after a guy is back on the field. If the rest eats into his normal offseason prep, I wouldn't be shocked to see him come out of the gates ice cold in 2027. So here's my plan: if the Anthony manager in your league starts panicking after a slow April, that's your buy window. He'll only be 23 next year, with an elite eye and plenty of thump. I'm happy to take the discount and let him work out the kinks on my roster. Just don't expect a smooth ride out of the gate.
