JD on Jac Caglianone (Oct 21, 2026): Cags took a major leap forward in the second half of 2026 and may have gone under the radar because the Royals didn't have much else to watch this year. He slashed .337/.373/.549 with 8 home runs and 4 stolen bases, all while limiting his Ks to a very manageable 20.6% K rate. The underlying metrics back it up too with a 93.8(!) Average EV and xwOBA of .363, which wasn't far off from his full-season xwOBA of .359. The only thing in the profile that really screams regression is the .361 BABIP, however his expected batting average was .283 because the quality of his contact is so strong. I wouldn't expect as much batting average regression as you would typically expect to see from someone who ran a BABIP this high. The last piece of the puzzle that I'd really like to see from someone with as much power as he has is an improved launch angle. If he can get his 7.7° launch angle up to even 10° he's going to hit so many more home runs with how hard he hits the ball. From there, his only real deficit is his poor walk rate. But if it doesn't lead to an alarming amount of strikeouts, a la Joey Gallo, I'm not sure we necessarily need to concern ourselves with it from a fantasy perspective. I think he will be a very valuable dynasty asset if he makes that one tweak, and don't be afraid to make a big move early in 2027 if you see positive launch angle progress in April.
JD on Julio Rodriguez (Oct 2, 2026): To be clear, Julio is great for the game of baseball. I also think he's great for the Mariners, but somehow he has managed to disappoint me as a fantasy asset. Historically, he was always a slow starter that ended the season red hot, but second half Julio decided to take an early vacation this year as he was arguably worse post ASB break than he was before. I think T-Mobile park has historically been a big factor as well, as the run environment seems to really hurt him, but the splits were reversed this year as well. Just look at the splits from 2022 - 2025: 1st Half: .260/.319/.418 wRC+ 114 2nd Half: .297/.351/.552 wRC+ 154 Home: .256/.315/.431 wRC+ 120 Away: .291/.346/.504 wRC+ 137 And here is 2026: 1st Half: .259/.323/.424 2nd Half: .230/.286/.369 Home: .258/.315/.453 Away: .236/.300/.353 I still think that he can have a season where he puts it all together (hence my aggressive ranking of him relative to the value he's put up over the last three years). I wouldn't fault you for not being a believer anymore and seeing Julio for the player he is, not the player he might become.
