JD on Reid Detmers (Sep 17, 2026): The Angels fired Mike Maddux on August 11th. Since that day, Reid Detmers has logged a 1.15 ERA with 10 K/9 and a miniscule 0.7/9 BB rate. Word is that Mike Maddux was very anti-sabermetrics and letting pitchers gather data to improve their game. It reminds me of when the Nationals posted a sign in the bullpen last year that read "I don't care how hard you throw ball 4" and it led to one of the worst staffs in the league. Its also a really bad look when you coach arguably the worst staff in a league, and as soon as you leave they become a borderline top 10 staff. It's amazing what an impact a rotten organizational structure can do to a players development, and I don't think this is the last example of incompetence that is uncovered now that Arte Moreno is out of the picture. For Detmers specifically, I'm hoping that the breakout we've been waiting on for years is finally here and be builds off of a strong 2026 to be a Cy Young candidate in 2027.
JD on Taj Bradley (Jun 3, 2026): I'm sort of a buyer here, I loved the profile with the Rays but for some reason he couldn't put it together. Same thing happened to Baz and I wouldn't say Baz is killing it in Baltimore but he does seem to look slightly better and he is finding his groove over the last month. For some guys the Rays system works and for some it doesn't. There's a lesson there going forward that some talented pitchers may not thrive with the Rays but they are worth following to their next teams.
