JD on Reid Detmers (Sep 17, 2026): The Angels fired Mike Maddux on August 11th. Since that day, Reid Detmers has logged a 1.15 ERA with 10 K/9 and a miniscule 0.7/9 BB rate. Word is that Mike Maddux was very anti-sabermetrics and letting pitchers gather data to improve their game. It reminds me of when the Nationals posted a sign in the bullpen last year that read "I don't care how hard you throw ball 4" and it led to one of the worst staffs in the league. Its also a really bad look when you coach arguably the worst staff in a league, and as soon as you leave they become a borderline top 10 staff. It's amazing what an impact a rotten organizational structure can do to a players development, and I don't think this is the last example of incompetence that is uncovered now that Arte Moreno is out of the picture. For Detmers specifically, I'm hoping that the breakout we've been waiting on for years is finally here and be builds off of a strong 2026 to be a Cy Young candidate in 2027.
JD on Ryan Weathers (Jun 17, 2026): I'm higher on Ryan Weathers than most but I am going to have to move him down in the rankings because he has not looked great in his last 3 starts (and 4 of his last 5). I love his stuff and I think he is going to be a great arm as he continues to settle into a rotation spot, but I think I was a little too aggressive ranking him at #36SP initially.
