JD on JJ Wetherholt (Oct 20, 2026): This might be one of the first rankings where I'm using the eye test rather than the player's actual statistics to make this call. On the surface a slash line of .242/.339/.365 really doesn't scream top 50 dynasty asset. He also really struggled in the second half of the season with an anemic .608 OPS. However, I think that JJ may have run out of steam playing his first full season in the big leagues and there are bigger things ahead of him entering his age-24 season. For one, an 89.7 EV from someone with this profile should have resulted in more power than 17 home runs. He also pretty significantly underperformed his xwOBA of .347 at a .318 wOBA and I think he is bound to improve on that in 2027. There's also something to be said about playing for a team that really isn't competitive in the second half of the year, and I think this may have plagued both Walker and Wetherholt a bit. As I'm writing this, I feel like I'm just coping with some flawed underlying metrics and wouldn't blame you for having JJ lower than this, but I'm a believer in the skill set and think that he will improve on his 2026 season next year.
JD on Ronald Acuna Jr. (Oct 20, 2026): No one has drawn more consternation from his lack of ranking in the top 25 than Ronald Acuna Jr., and I think I understand why: it's hard to separate out the incredibly high highs from the current player that he is now. I left this comment on a Reddit question regarding Acuna: "Acuna just missed the top 25, so they aren’t as far off as they seem (Greene vs. Acuna). But it’s a fair question, for me it comes down to where I think they are on the aging curve. Acuna (29 in 2027) might be start to lose a step with the injuries catching up with him. Bat speed is the biggest indicator for me, it’s dropped steadily since 2023 and it resulted in his lowest exit velo of his career last year. " This was before I really got into my top 50, and as I worked on my rankings I kept finding situations where I would rather have a younger player with his prime ahead of him. I think of these rankings as tier based, so if you want to argue Acuna over Walker I won't fault you, but I think guys like Greene, Julio, and Harris are in a league of their own, if for no reason other than the age difference. This is a different story in redraft leagues. If you have a team ready to go for it next year, I could see paying a top 25 price for Acuna because of the value he can provide in 2027 and 2028. But I think over a 7-year period, he is a safe bet to decline pretty severely towards the tail end of that window.
